Late Twenties

May 27, 2021

Clarity has slowly commenced
To bestow itself upon us
As we move far past
Our teenage years we now
Know how to control our
Own destinies
(I now know how to be happy)
We pass Saturdays on the beach
Drinking hard kombucha
Then spend soft-earned money
On backyard barbecues with
Salty air fried potatoes

And yet the hardening has begun

My friend Sam has two children
Beautiful accidents
Of course we love them
But the shock was unsettling
And responsibility can be grim
I caress my boyfriends back
As he feels his throat lump
Dead mom
Same as Abby’s new companion
Our group is still mostly gain
Not loss
But if you sniff
Age approaches us
Like the first hint of crunch
In late August
We glow warm with contentment
But the chill is among us
